Weaving Together was a month long celebration of art, music and poetry featuring the unique work of artist and song writer Scott Massarsky.
Since Scott credits his grandmother, Jewish Home resident Anita Rosenfeld, for much of his success, it was no coincidence that he chose September 9th, Grandparent’s Day for the opening reception of this exciting exhibit. The reception unveiled over 70 pieces of art and was dedicated to the coming of autumn, healing and the human spirit. Scott’s ink blot paintings are colorful explosions of ink on paper reminiscent of Rorschach’s black and white diagnostic drawings. His sand forests are sculptural garden environments constructed from dried plants and herbs gathered on the premises of the Jewish Home. They are grounded in sand and displayed in exotic glass bottles and ordinary apothecary jars. Personal favorites include the Fairy Garden and the Fountain, which Scott donated because it was inspired by the fountains in the ponds here at Rockleigh.
Scott performed a small selection of songs and poetry on the 9th as a prelude to the special performance scheduled for September 30th. To the delight of all, he introduced a new song called “In the Garden” which he wrote in honor of the Garden of Remembrance located just off the main lobby.
The month long exhibit ended on September 30th with a day of “weaving together.” The event began in the morning when Yukako Satone from Loop of the Loom in Englewood taught the residents to weave. Twenty residents participated in the morning festivities laughing, weaving and creating a beautiful work of art which was displayed later in the day. In the afternoon, Scott was joined by family and friends for a truly uplifting set of music. The residents sang and swayed as Scott and his friends sang original songs and old favorites. The final performance featured lullabies inspired by Scott’s new nephew Braden and stories related to Scott by his grandmother Anita. It was truly an uplifting celebration honoring the program’s themes of healing, the changing seasons and the cycles of life.
Scott exhibits his work and performs throughout the New York/New Jersey area. If you would like to contact Scott, he can be reached at scottoise@hotmail.com. For further information, visit his web page: http://www.myspace.com/scottmassarskyandthemakeshiftorchestra.
